Marine from Camp Pendleton killed in combat in Afghanistan

A Marine from Camp Pendleton has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced Friday.

Lance Cpl. Nicholas S. O'Brien, 21, of Stanley, N.C., was killed Thursday in Helmand province, long a Taliban stronghold. O'Brien was assigned to the Camp Pendleton-based 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment.
