The ?Cash-back car?: Danish EV owners to sell power back to the grid
The first pilot will consist of 30 cars. According to�Nuvve, individual EV owners could make $10,000 over�the lifetime of a vehicle (estimated at 8 years) depending on market price and owner commitment.
The EV owner makes the battery available to Nuvve during a given time period and, depending on supply and�demand in the grid, the company uses the car as a short-term energy storage resource to help�regulate the power frequency of the grid. Frequency regulation involves adding or reducing power in real-time to match demand.
Although EVs have been discussed for some time as a possible electricity storage solution, the technology wasn?t expected to be deployed in practice for at least another five years. Since most EVs, like other cars, are stationary 95 percent of the time, this could be a good deal for both owners and utilities.
Not all EVs are capable of �the bi-directional power flow that allows energy to be drained from the battery back to the grid. Other EVs will still be able to participate by relieving the grid of surplus power when needed.�The�2012 Mitsubishi MiEV, 2012 Daimler Smart E, BMW�Mini E, Detroit Electric e63 and Luxgen 7 MPV and SUVall support bi-directional power flow.
Denmark is an obvious choice for Nuvve given its high volume of wind-power and the problem of maintaining a constant energy supply in the presence of large volumes of intermittent power such as that generated by wind. Wind generation tends to reach a maximum at night when demand is at its lowest, making storage necessary. Renewable energy sources like wind also cause voltage rises which can result in grid instability when a large amount of renewable power is feeding into the grid, such as on a stormy night.
Nuvve?s V2G (vehicle to grid) solution was developed at the University of Delaware under the supervision of Professor Willet Kempton who now serves as Nuvve?s CTO. The owner indicates how far he wants to drive on a particular day and the�periods during which the car is available to the grid. A computer embedded in the EV measures the power absorbed and fed back to the grid and communicates with Nuvve?s servers.
Nuvve is based in San Diego but plans to establish a Danish headquarters in Horsens. The company was founded in 2010 and is privately funded.

Apple appears to be dropping AirPort branding for Wi-Fi
Since 1999, when Steve Jobs introduced the iBook as the first portable computer with Wi-Fi capabilities, Apple has used the term AirPort to refer to 802.11 wireless connectivity. The rest of the world knows this technology by the name Wi-Fi, and it appears that with the upcoming release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, Apple will be changing references to wireless networking from "AirPort" to "Wi-Fi" across the system.
The change resolves a common issue for Mac neophytes, who often search in vain for Wi-Fi controls on their new Macs only to find something confusingly called AirPort. The name change may also explain recent reports that Apple's networking products -- the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and Time Capsule -- are in short supply at some Apple Stores. Perhaps a Wi-Fi product refresh and a change in branding will both accompany the Lion launch next month.

Clinton Warns African Leaders: Reform or Face Uprisings

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a warning to African leaders today: reform or potentially face the same unrest that has threatened to topple longtime rulers in North Africa and the Middle East.
In a speech to the African Union in Ethiopia, Clinton said that citizens are no longer accepting repressive governments and that the internet and social media are providing a platform like no other for these ideas to spread and take root.
?This wave of activism, which came to be known as the Arab Spring, has particular significance for leaders in Africa and elsewhere who hold on to power at all costs, who suppress dissent, who enrich themselves and their supporters at the expense of their own people,? she said.
?If you believe that the freedoms and opportunities that we speak about as universal should not be shared by your own people, men and women equally, or if you do not desire to help your own people work and live with dignity, you are on the wrong side of history, and time will prove that,? Clinton added pointedly.
Africa?s leaders might have good reason to follow her advice, as Clinton has a track record of being right about this.
In January, in a speech to Arab leaders at a conference in Qatar, Clinton warned that they must reform soon or watch progress ?sink into sand.?
Just days later Tunisian strongman Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali became the first dictator to fall and Egypt?s Hosni Mubarak soon followed suit. Over the following months uprisings threatened to topple the rulers of Libya, Syria, Bahrain, Yemen, Morocco and elsewhere.

Long Beach police release sketch of 'person of interest' in theft of 780-year-old St. Anthony relic

Long Beach police Monday night released a sketch of a "person of interest" in the theft of a� 780-year-old religious relic that is displayed annually as a tribute to St. Anthony.
The theft was reported Monday morning at St. Anthony Church, near 6th Street and Olive Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Officials with the Los Angeles Archdiocese said the 16-inch relic in honor of St. Anthony, housed in an elaborate casing, was taken from a church cabinet.
In Catholicism, St. Anthony is the patron saint of lost or missing things. The relic was stolen on the anniversary of St. Anthony's death 780 years ago, church officials said.
The relic is displayed only once a year to honor� St. Anthony and was given to the church named for him when it was first established 110 years ago. St. Anthony's was the first Catholic Church in Long Beach and served the entire city.
Long Beach police said the person of interest in this case is an unidentified heavy-set Latina woman in her 30s, about 5 feet to 5 feet 3, with dark, wavy, unkempt hair. Witnesses told police she was acting suspiciously in the church the day before the theft.

ABC News' Ann Compton (@AnnCompton) reports: �Through his Press Secretary, President Obama has finally joined the chorus of other Democrats declaring the behavior of Congressman Anthony Weiner a problem.
?The President feels, we feel at the White house �this is a distraction,? White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters on board Air Force One when they asked about the unravelling developments. ?Obviously as Rep. Weiner has said himself, his behavior was inappropriate. Dishonesty was inappropriate."
But Carney refused to go the next step and call for Weiner to resign from Congress. ?We think this is a distraction, obviously from the important business this President needs to conduct and Congress needs to conduct. Beyond that I don?t have any more comment.?

In bid to cut costs, Burbank plans to outsource school crossing guards

In a move officials said could save $100,000, the Burbank City Council last week voted to outsource all 25 crossing-guard jobs currently being overseen by the Burbank Police Department.
Police Administrator Josephine Wilson assured the council that even though the guards would be overseen and paid via an outside firm, they would maintain their current wages and remain at their assigned crosswalks.
But they will likely lose the health and pension benefits they currently receive as being part of the Burbank City Employees Assn., and crossing guards on Tuesday bemoaned losing the authority of being associated with the Police Department, as well as their badges.
The move would transfer the employment contracts of the city crossing guards to All City Management Services, according to the Burbank Leader, a firm that also goes by ?the crossing guard company.?
